In COSM, 2–4 players take the roles of rival Rifters—outlaw pilots whose ships have been severely damaged and trapped inside a collapsing rift. To escape, players must scavenge the Rift for the Parts, Cores, and Cosmite needed to repair their ships while navigating around obstacles and avoiding or attacking their rivals.

On their turn, players use Cores to perform actions that move their ships, launch attacks, and collect items from the board. These actions can be modified by Part abilities, which make actions substantially more powerful. Positioning is critical: ships must navigate asteroids and other hazards, anticipate enemy attacks, and compete for resources scattered throughout the Rift.

Players earn Repair Points by refining Cores and collecting sets of matching Parts. The first player to reach 10 Repair Points and then move their ship over the Exit Portal escapes the Rift and wins the game.
