Coalition Chess is a four-player chess variant devised in the early 1920s by Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, better known for his contributions to modernist music.

Rule

Four players sit around a 10×10 board: Yellow (bottom), Black (top), Red (left), and Green (right).

Yellow and Black are the greater powers and each has a King, representing the land forces. Red and Green are the lesser powers, representing the air force and navy respectively.

During the first three rounds, each lesser power may form a coalition with either greater power.

The King is the same, but its shape is elongated vertically.
The Machine-gun is an expendable King-and-Pawn compound piece.
The Guard moves as a Pawn.

The Motorcyclist moves as a Bishop.
The Engineer moves as a Knight.

The Artillery moves as a Rook.
The Tank moves as a Queen.

The Submarine moves as a Queen or a Knight.
The Plane makes two successive Knight moves (thus remaining on the same color), and may not return to its starting square.

Yellow has the first move and may freely arrange its pieces within its designated setup area, while the other players begin with fixed initial placements.
Turn order proceeds as Yellow, Black, Red, and Green.If two coalitions are formed, the game proceeds as a contest between alliances; the coalition that eliminates the king of opposing coalition wins.

Coalitions may be formed during the first three rounds. A coalition can be declared by verbal agreement, by giving check to the King of a greater power, or by capturing a piece belonging to the opposing greater power.

If one coalition is declared and the opposing lesser power does not form a coalition within the first three rounds, each player in the declared coalition receives 1 point, while players who did not form a coalition receive no points.

If two coalitions are formed, victory yields 6 points, a draw yields 2 points, and defeat yields 0 points.

During the first three rounds, Black, Red, and Green may, instead of making a move, rearrange their pieces within their designated setup areas.
