Centerpede is a simple game with a slinky movement mechanic and potential for deep strategy. Centerpedes, an Escherian sort of creature, unfold themselves as the game progresses, growing larger and larger to attain more freedom of movement and constricting power to defeat the enemy colony. Joining them are insects called "Workers" that freeload off the Centerpede storehouses in times of peace but are put on the frontline during battle. Centerpede is a perfectly cute game for kids and adults alike. The rules are simple... well... for a chess variant, and the mechanics inspire the imagination. Corey L. Clark designed Centerpede in a particularly productive late summer of 2024. A game of Centerpede cannot end in a draw.
Materials: a 169 cell hex hex board (side 8), chess queens, 2 rooks, and 2 knights (depicted as 4 rooks here due to lack of limitation on materials in virtual space) in two colors representing the Centerpedes, and 6 pawns representing the Workers. Set them up according to the game image. You will also need about 30 pieces in two colors like stones for the bodies of the Centerpedes.
Gameplay: Players draw ten stones to begin the game, these are the initial reserves the Centerpedes may be grown with. White makes the first move, a single action, from then on turns alternate with any two actions per turn (whether moving 1 cell, growing a Centerpede or removing an immobile enemy Centerpede or Worker). Workers may spend an action to progress 1 cell in any of the three forward directions. Centerpedes start out as just single pieces and begin their lives with the same forward movement as the Worker pawns. However Centerpedes can obtain a lot more degrees of movement and wrap themselves around enemy pieces to capture them.
Growing Centerpedes: When a Centerpede grows, it consists of a chess piece head and a stone tail. You may grow any Centerpede initially by appending a tail to the head, then each additional stone added must only contact the previous tail of that particular Centerpede, no other stones or the head, nor any part of any other Centerpede.
Moving Centerpedes: This is where things get real fun! A centerpede moves by projecting its head in any direction, so it is completely disconnected from its body, then the tail takes the place of where the head was previously linking it back to its body. The move is legal if either the head or the tail were moved forward in this process and as long as the Centerpede is not contacting any friendly Centerpedes; contacting Workers is allowed.
Capturing Enemy Centerpedes and Workers: If an enemy Centerpede or Worker is stuck and cannot move anywhere (even though its your turn) you may spend an action removing it from the board. After you remove the Centerpede or Worker you get a store of stones in your color equal to the number of pieces captured (chess pieces and stones)
Game End: You win Centerpede either by capturing the enemy Queen or by occupying the enemy Queen's home with your Queen, The point at the end of the board.
