In Capital: 1929 - Wall Street players find themselves in New York, only a few years before the onset of the Great Depression of 1929. Each player takes the role of executive characters, such as prominent personalities or ambitious entrepreneurs, who try to dominate over the U.S. Economy using the mechanisms of the game. The game unfolds over four Eras, each representing a historical period in America, starting with the Second Industrial Revolution, from the Gilded Age (around 1865) and heading through the Progressive Era and Roaring Twenties to the Great Depression (1929). Players must work to prevent the economic collapse, saving the U.S. economy and rewriting history.
The game is played in four rounds which represent the four eras as listed above, and each round is divided into two main phases. In the Operation Phase, the characters try, through the mechanisms of worker placement, engine building, resource management and bidding to build factories and produce resources which will trade them at the market place or exchange them in order to get shares from industries listed on the Wall Street — all in pursuit of expanding their capital. In the Stock Market Phase, that capital can be invested in the volatile stock market to multiply fortunes… or risk ruin.
Each round consists of four turns, during which the players place a worker and perform the related action. Additionally, they may, optionally, load cargo ships, fulfill contracts or repay loans. During the game, due to the economic crisis, all state-owned industries are getting privatized, through the thrilling auctions.
The game is won by the one who accumulates the most wealth in CPs (Capital Points). However, if the Great Crash of 1929 occurs, everything changes: the rules of wealth are rewritten, and a new winner emerges from the New Deals.
