The players divide into two teams. Each team receives the same number of playing pieces, which must also be distributed equally within the team. The number of pieces for each team can range from 10 to 16. Taking more or fewer is not advisable. One team receives red pieces and plays from point A, the other team receives blue pieces and plays from point B. In addition to these blue and red playing pieces, a single piece of a different color, the target piece, is needed.

After the order within each team is determined by lot, player #1 of the red team starts. In subsequent games, player #1 of the team that just lost starts. Player #1 throws the target piece first. They roll 5 dice and move the target piece forward on the center track the number of spaces equal to the total number rolled. However, if this roll totals less than 9, player #1 of the opposing team tries to place the target piece, and so on, alternating until a roll of at least 9 successfully places the target piece.

Player #1 of the red team then rolls three dice and moves their playing piece forward the number of spaces equal to the total number rolled, this time onto one of the two side lanes. Player #1 of the opposing team then rolls and moves their piece in the same way, followed by player #2 of the first team, and so on, alternating until all pieces have been placed. Only the side lanes are occupied.

However, if a player lands on the spaces occupied by the goal, they place their piece on the center lane in place of the goal, roll another die, and move the goal forward the number of spaces equal to the number rolled. This is usually disadvantageous for their team, as they are essentially pushing the goal towards the opposing team.

If a player rolls a number that is already occupied on both equal spaces on the two side lanes, they remove a playing piece from one of these spaces, place their own piece on that space, and move the piece previously occupying that space to the nearest available space. But always on the same track! The player is free to choose which stone they want to dislodge; they can move a stone of their own team more favorably or place an opponent's stone less favorably.

If a player moves a stone onto a space that also contains the goal, this displaced stone also moves to the center track in place of the goal. The owner of the stone, or someone from the same team, then rolls a die and moves the goal forward (towards the opponent) by the number of spaces shown. In this way, a player can dislodge an opponent's stone and force the opposing team to move the goal to their advantage.

Once all stones have been placed, the stones on the eight spaces surrounding the goal are counted. The team with the most stones on these eight spaces receives points equal to the excess of stones. The spaces on the center track are included in the count, and any stones on these spaces count double. If these 8 spaces are evenly occupied by both sides, another 6 spaces are added and counted. If there is still an even score, the game remains a draw.

Games are played until one side has 24 (or a predetermined number of) marks. That side then wins. If the game continues, the sides must be reassigned.
