Battle Brothers - The Board Game is a card-based 1 vs 1 skirmish game based on the cult video game Battle Brothers. Players take control of a human band of mercenaries or an orc marauder warband in a battle; to defeat your opponent, you need to rout them and make them flee, or capture their banner.
A game begins with the Economy Phase, essentially a deck-building mini game with two variants: one where players can develop their deck to a maximum value, with every card having a different cost; and a Quick Draft for a faster, simpler approach, with 3 rounds to buy the cards you want, but with a set amount of gold each round for it.

Once each player has their deck, the Skirmish Phase begins with "Deployment". Random Terrain Tiles are placed on the game board and their final position is influenced by the players. This is another element to ensure replayability, as every game, the board will be different.

During the following round based Skirmish, Players perform Actions with their units: They can Move, Attack, make use of Skills or Consumables cards of the Players deck, or faction specific abilities (such as a brutal Orc - Linebreak or a clever Human - Footwork). However, which Player gets to act first and with how many of their units depends on a single Initiative value that is shared by both Players, and which will change in the course of the Skirmish.

The Modifier deck, used to randomize attacks, adds depth and ensures replayability to the game: attacks neither deal a "fixed" amount of damage nor is the damage randomized by a dice roll; instead modifiers, which are part of a Player's deck and which will vary every game are used. This modifier system is easy to understand for beginners but difficult to master in order to take full advantage of a constantly changing deck.
