From May to September 1939, as border conflicts between the Soviet Union and Japan escalated, a fierce battle ultimately broke out between the Soviets, the Japanese, and their puppet states, Manchukuo and Mengjiang. The conflict initially began with small-scale skirmishes between the border troops of Manchukuo and Mengjiang, but soon escalated as their Soviet and Japanese backers poured in reinforcements, transforming the minor clashes into a large-scale border war.

This game focuses on the peak phase of the conflict from July to September. At this point, major forces from both sides had just arrived at the battlefield and were attempting their first engagements. In July, the Japanese launched two large-scale offensives to seize control of the disputed border area, but both were thwarted by Soviet forces. By August, the Soviets launched a massive counteroffensive, completely annihilating or expelling the Japanese troops from the contested region.
